NZSG Maori Interest Group

 

Since this time the group has gone through many changes and today has grown into a strong, well organized group of dedicated volunteers and members. Our aim is to advise others researching their Māori Whakapapa by way of sharing our accumulated knowledge of areas of research and to compile a list of books and repositories that will assist others with their Māori research.

As volunteers, we are not in a position to undertake research for individuals but we do offer assistance and advice to others as a means to further their own research. Included in this sphere the MIG has produced Whakapapa – An introduction to researching Māori and Pākehā-Māori families, their history, heritage and culture which is sold at a modest price by our group, with all proceeds being used to acquire further research material for the benefit of all.

Membership of the Māori Interest Group is free to individual financial members of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. Our newsletter Te Reo is published online in February, May, August and November each year. For our members without internet access or for those who prefer a hardcopy issue, upon receipt of an annual Koha and four Stamped Self-Addressed Envelopes members can receive a hardcopy of Te Reo. Members are also actively encouraged to contribute articles and research queries for inclusion in the newsletter.
Our AGM is held annually in conjunction with the NZSG AGM and all members are welcome to attend and participate in these events.

In 2009 the Māori Interest Group established the concept of regular meetings, initially focused in the Auckland area but eventually planned to also include Wellington and the South Island.
